What is a Battery Passport? How to Obtain a Battery Passport?

A Battery Passport is a requirement introduced under the European Union’s new Battery Regulation 2023/1542. This passport is an electronic file containing detailed information about each battery and is designed to ensure the traceability of the battery throughout its entire life cycle. The purpose of this passport is to enhance transparency regarding the sustainability, safety, and efficiency of batteries.

The Battery Passport Must Include the Following Information:

  • Battery model
  • Battery composition
  • Information about dismantling, repair, remanufacturing, and second-life operators
  • Information about recycling

The specific procedures for obtaining this passport will be outlined in more detailed guidelines and technical documents related to the implementation of the regulation.

This passport will be mandatory for rechargeable industrial batteries and electric vehicle batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh starting from 2027. This passport must be prepared before such batteries are placed on the EU market or put into service.
