EU Regulation on Batteries and Waste Batteries No. 2023/1542 and CE Certification Process

EU Regulation on Batteries; The new European Union Regulation 2023/1542, which entered into force on July 12, 2023, is a piece of legislation that regulates batteries and waste batteries. This regulation amends Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation 2019/1020/EU and repeals Directive 2006/66/EC, establishing rules on the sustainability, performance, safety, collection, recycling, and second life of batteries. Additionally, it includes regulations regarding battery information for end-users and economic operators.

The AB Regulation on Batteries applies to all battery categories, including portable batteries, primary batteries, light vehicle batteries, electric vehicle batteries, and industrial batteries. This regulation applies regardless of the battery’s shape, volume, weight, design, material composition, type, chemical composition, intended use, or purpose, whether it is incorporated into other products or intended to accompany them. It also applies to batteries integrated into or connected to products.

The Regulation contains various sections covering sustainability and safety requirements, conformity issues, and the digital battery passport. Among these requirements are sustainability, safety, labeling, and information requirements for batteries to be sold and put into service in the European Union market. In addition, extended producer responsibility, minimum requirements for waste battery collection and treatment, and reporting are also covered by this regulation.

The EU Battery Regulation is expected to come into force in February 2024. However, certain exceptions and other provisions of this regulation should also be taken into account.
